Have You Met?

Meet Jenn Schuler, Blacktie’s Communication Director.  Jenn has been working with Blacktie-Pittsburgh for two years and serves as our focal point with local non-profits to write their event articles, Have You Met Feature Stories and coordinates our photographers monthly for Blacktie coverage.  “I love my job because I get to learn so much about all of the non-profits in Pittsburgh and the incredible work they do to assist so many individuals and families,” said Jenn.  “I’ve become the go to person for friends and my family looking to volunteer or support a charity.  They tell me their area of interest and I can now point them towards numerous organizations doing incredible work in that arena.” 

Jenn graduated with a BS. In Psychology from Frostburg University in Western Md. and worked for 11 years for GE’s electronic commerce division before deciding to stay at home full time with her 2 sons. “There were years of chairing everything from homeroom parties and school carnivals to family reunions and block parties” laughs Jenn. “I guess as they got older and I decided to return to work, fundraising was in my blood by then.  It was a natural fit for me to move into the non-profit sector.  I worked for 5 years fundraising and as Community Outreach Coordinator for a local agency who have a homeless residential program for women before joining Blacktie-Pittsburgh.”

“I know firsthand what it is like before an event – you are just crazy busy,” says Jenn. “I always want our clients to feel like we are part of their team to help in any way possible.  The more I know about what an organization wants their potential donors to learn about your organization, initiatives or events, the more effective I can be in helping you to achieve those goals.”  Jenn’s biggest advice – keep her in the loop with happenings in your organizations.  She suggests sending her emails about press releases, program brochures, organizational changes, new fundraising ideas or initiatives.  “The more information I get from my clients, the less information I need to ask from them during a busy time. “ It’s a fine line I walk to add value without becoming another task.”

“It’s really a privilege to do what I do,” said Jenn.“These organizations and their staff work tirelessly to fulfill their missions and are so passionate in their support for the people they serve.  It’s an honor for them to share their story with me and let me relay their good work in our community.”


Fun Facts About Jenn:

Extrovert or Introvert? Extrovert – definitely!

Dog or cat lover?  I am an avid dog lover!  I have a 5 year old Coton De Tulear, Zoey, who has me wrapped around her little paws!

Passions: First and foremost my family.  I also love movies, books and anything outdoors – hiking, camping, white water rafting – you name it!

Volunteer Work: I serve on the Board of Park & Recreation for Upper St. Clair Township, and as Committee Woman for my Ward & District.  I enjoy serving the homeless in different capacities and I am a Domestic Violence Advocate.  I also feel a lot of love for our Veterans!

2016 New Years Resolution – “Well I have teenagers,” Jenn giggles.  “I’d have to say I want to work on being more patient.”

What type of Music do you like?  I am very eclectic.  My last two concerts were Journey& Doobie Brothers and Justin Timberlake.  My youngest brother, Dan has also gotten me into the roots rocks type of music.  He is lead singer for a band called Danger Muffin that tours the country and I love that as well.

Jenn is amazing and always on top of assignments! Not only does she emit such a vibrant personality, but she is also blessed with the uncanny gift for organizing events and coordinating photographers and of course writing great stories for the many important fund raising events around the Burgh!
