PREMIERE EVENTS
The mission of Bethelem Haven is to help homeless women by providing shelter and supportive services and by collaborating with the community to end homelessness. This year, Bethelem Haven is celebrating 25 years of compassion, integrity and hospitality in our effort to help homeless women. Since we opened our doors in 1981, Bethlehem Haven has been a force in the homeless community. We have made great strides in creating a collaborative human services program that promotes eficient and effective use of human resources, space, equipment and supplies. We are now recognized by other community leaders as "a role model for nonprofit organizations" in Pittsburgh. In fact, Bethlehem Haven was awarded the Alfred W. Wishard, Jr., Award for Excellence in Nonprofit management on November 2, 2005 at the Forbes Fund's annual research conference. Programs and services, including the emergency overnight shelter, a residential recovery program, supportive transitional and permanent houseing, and a range of medical, dental, mental health, life skills and job training, are described at www.bethlehemhaven.org
In 1981 Bethlehem Haven's emergency shelter for homeless women was founded in the basement of a downtown church. In the mid-90's we recognized that the original focus of "crisis intervention" was insufficient to address the multiple issues confronting the growing number of homeless individuals. In 2000 the Haven created a collaborative model of service providers, completed a successful capital campaign, and moved into Fifth Avenue Commons, a four-story, 21,000-square-foot building in uptown Pittsburgh. The partnerships formed during the capital campaign-with service providers, volunteers, and funders-have inspired and helped to sustain our programs through the past four years. Since moving to Fifth Avenue Commons, the Haven has provided shelter and supportive services to more than 2,000 homeless women. The continuum of care consists of a range of housing and supportive services designed to enable each woman to identify her needs, develop a plan of action, and work toward successful outcomes. Residential programs include: Emergency shelter for up to 28 women Supportive housing and services (STAR) for 10 women in recovery. Transitional housing and supportive services (Step-Up) for up to 10 women in two programs. SOAR is a Safe Haven provides permanent housing and supportive services for up to 16 women in Allegheny County who have multiple episodes of mental health related homelessness (located off-site at LifesWorks Western PA). Services are available on site through the following Haven programs: Health & Wellness Center. Medical, podiatry, and dental care for homeless women and men (Health Care for the Homeless Project/Primary Health Care Services) and obstetric/gynecological services and women's health education for homeless women (Magee Women's Hospital UPMC). 902 Clinic.
